Eden in the South Pacific By Demac
From the minute we climbed into the old Mercedes and rambled over and around the back streets of Nadi we knew we were in for an adventure. The almost perfectly kept Merc got us to the Sea Plane in one piece where we were greeted by a not so typical pilot whose casual demeanor quickly put us to ease. His long blonde hair somehow went with the relaxed Fijian lifestyle and the title of pilot for Turtle airways.
The only thing we had heard of Turtle Island was that it was very exclusive and that we would more than likely run into a Hollywood movie star, famous singer or perhaps ex-President Clinton. Although famous people have visited the island that perception could not have been any further from the truth, since we found that “everyday” type people also visited the island.
We were on our way to a week of hob nobbing it to an Island Paradise where Brooke Sheild’s “Blue Lagoon” was filmed. I could hardly wait to run naked down the beach, I figured if it was OK in the movie then Fiji was ready for my beautiful body!
After a short 30-Minute flight we landed on the famous Blue Lagoon and taxi'd up to the beach. From here on in we felt like, and were treated like, movie stars. The welcoming committee was there, staff and guests alike and straight away drinks were thrust into our hands. Being Australians, we were immediately at ease with this gesture and for the next week we trialed some beautiful wines, spirits and unique liqueurs.
On the Island all activities apart from massages are inclusive along with all food and beverages. Over the next week we were subjected to private beach lunches, secluded dinners for two, scuba diving, deep sea fishing, snorkeling, horse riding, sailing, kayaking and windsurfing. Now the quality and presentation of the food has to be seen to be believed. When sitting down to dinner you could quite easily forget that you are on a tropical island out in the Pacific and think that you are in a five star hotel in Paris instead. Full marks to the resorts chef, his culinary masterpieces would not look out of place in the Savoy hotel and it was certainly a coup for Turtle Island to land his services. Mind you looking at the location he has to “put up with” I don’t think he minds too much.
